How does the brain regulate itself?

Mindstate Psychology provides online courses for psychologists
Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that helps individuals train their brain to function more effectively. It works by monitoring the electrical activity of your brainwaves through sensors placed on your head. The brainwave activity is monitored in real-time, allowing clients to receive feedback on their brain functioning. During a neurofeedback session, the client watches a movie, and the computer provides feedback through visual and auditory signals to indicate when the brain's activity is moving toward a more desired state.

Over time, this feedback helps the brain learn to regulate itself better, leading to improvements in conditions like anxiety, ADHD, depression, and PTSD. The process is non-invasive and helps to promote lasting neural changes through the brain’s natural ability to adapt, known as neuroplasticity.

Discover the Neurofeedback process

Neurofeedback therapy can be conducted in several ways. Some practitioners use guesswork based on symptoms you might experience. We find this to be inappropriate for something as advanced as the human brain. The most effective way, and in our opinion the most appropriate way, is to gain an understanding of how your brain currently functions before commencing treatment. How do we know what to treat?
1
Data gathering
Unlike other practices, we begin by conducting a QEEG and ERP assessment of your brain. Our neurofeedback is guided by qualitative evidence of your actual performance, not just theories.
2
Consultation
After your initial QEEG assessment, you have a feedback session with an experienced practitioner. We discuss the assessment results, and what this means for you.
3
Training Commences
Once we develop a training plan, the neurofeedback sessions commence! You will have an experienced neurofeedback practitioner with you during your session.
The number of sessions varies depending on you, your condition and what we find in the initial assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Neurofeedback

What is neurofeedback, and how does it work?

Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that helps train the brain to function more efficiently. It involves monitoring brainwave activity in real-time through sensors placed on the scalp and using that information to guide the brain toward more balanced and healthy patterns.

Is neurofeedback an effective therapy?

Neurofeedback has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions such as anxiety, ADHD and attention span, depression, PTSD, sleep disorders, and even some types of chronic pain and migraines. You can discover more about the conditions neurofeedback can help with, and the evidence for its use, here.

Is neurofeedback the same as brain training?

Brain training is a way of strengthening cognitive skills by improving neural connections. Technically, any type of learning is a type of brain training! Neurofeedback is a specialised form of brain training that uses real-time monitoring of the brain's activity to improve mental functioning.

What conditions can neurofeedback help treat?

Neurofeedback has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions, including anxiety, ADHD, depression, PTSD, sleep disorders, and even some types of chronic pain and migraines. You can discover more about the conditions neurofeedback can help with, and the evidence for its use, here.

How do we know what areas of the brain to treat?

Neurofeedback can be done in a variety of ways, from guesswork based on symptoms to advanced assessments. At Mindstate Psychology, we use special brain scans called qEEG and ERP to understand how your brain is currently functioning, before beginning treatment.

More information about qEEGs, ERPs and the assessment process is available here.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Yes, neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive therapy. It does not involve the use of medications or electrical stimulation. The process simply provides real-time feedback to help the brain self-regulate. There is also extensive research documenting neurofeedback, showing it can be highly effective for many individuals with very low rates of adverse reactions.

How many neurofeedback sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Most people begin to see improvements after 10 to 20 sessions, but some may need more for lasting results. Generally, we recommend a minimum course of treatment as 20 to 40 sessions to see sustained results.

What does a neurofeedback session feel like?

A neurofeedback session is completely painless. Sensors are placed on the head to record brainwave activity while the individual watches a video that provide feedback based on their brain activity.

Are the effects of neurofeedback permanent?

While neurofeedback promotes lasting changes through neuroplasticity, maintenance sessions or follow-up treatments may be beneficial, especially if the individual experiences significant life changes or stressors after completing the initial course of therapy.

How do I choose a good neurofeedback service provider?

There are currently several neurofeedback therapy providers in Perth, such as Mindstate Psychology and Perth Brain Centre, and it can be difficult to know who to choose. It is important to ensure you see a reputable neurofeedback practitioner who has appropriate qualification and experience in conducting neurofeedback.

You should also ask your prospective provider how they determine what areas of the brain to treat. We believe that the only way to provide effective neurofeedback therapy in Perth is through an assessment of brain function via QEEG and ERP assessment. Even if you don't commence treatment with us, don't settle for treatment that has anything less than a QEEG-guided assessment.

What are neurofeedback Brain Training Systems?

Brain training systems are simply the programs and interfaces used to monitor and provide a real-time display of the electrical signals of your brain - allowing for the regulation of brain function! A variety of brain training programs exist, such as EEGer and NeurOptimal. Many require special qualifications and training to use.

At Mindstate Psychology, we use hoghly advanced and customisable Neurofeedback Brain Training systems, allowing our experienced practitioners to ensure that each training session is optimised to your treatment plan.

Is neurofeedback covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, neurofeedback training sessions are not eligible for rebates from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or Medicare. Some private health insurers like HBF will provide a partial rebate for the initial assessment, depending on your level of coverage. More information about fees for neurofeedback is available here.
