Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my first session?

We guide your first clinical psychology appointment based on your needs. Typically, the initial consultation isn’t too intense; it's about you and your psychologist get to know each other. We prioritize relationship-building as it's crucial to effective mental health treatment. In the first session, we also take time to discuss your needs and learn about your history. Depending on your condition and needs, we may also conduct testing or assessments.

How long does therapy typically last?

We tailor therapy sessions to your specific needs. Although each person is unique, we generally see improvement after several sessions. Your clinical psychologist will help you determine the treatment type and duration that will benefit you most.

Do I need a referral from a GP to see a clinical psychologist?

You can book an appointment with a clinical psychologist without a referral. However, you need a referral to receive a Medicare rebate. Medicare requires a specialist or your GP to provide a Mental Healthcare Plan. They cannot backdate this plan, so you must visit your doctor before your appointment with your psychologist.

Are clinical psychologists eligible for insurance rebates?

This depends on your particular health insurer and the type of cover you have. Some health funds cover psychology as part of your Extras, so it’s worth checking your policy. More information about fees and rebates is available on our fees page.

Can I combine clinical psychology with other therapies?

You can absolutely combine clinical psychology with other treatments. Most psychologists will recommend a variety of treatment approaches to best address your mental health issues. However, if you hear about a new therapy you’d like to try, it’s best to discuss this with your psychologist first.

Psychologists are not medical doctors and cannot advise you about taking medications. However, they can help you understand what other evidence-based treatment options may be available.

How are psychologists different from psychiatrists?

A psychiatrist is a type of medical doctor with specialist training in mental health. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication to treat a mental health condition or illness.

A psychologist cannot prescribe medications as they are not medical doctors. However, psychologists are still university-trained mental health professionals. Many psychiatrists refer clients to psychologists for psychological therapy. Mindstate Psychology works collaboratively with many psychiatrists across Perth.

What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a registered psychologist?

Registered psychologists are qualified mental health professionals who can offer therapy and counselling to individuals. Registered psychologists complete a 5-year university degree and internship. Clinical psychologists are specialists who have undertaken 8 years of university study. This additional study focuses on supporting and diagnosing mental health issues.
